Do Citizens Need a Digital City?
Ensuring Sustainable Growth
Half of the world’s population growth will take place in Africa by 2050, according to the UN, making it the fastest urbanising continent in the world. Thousands of extra clinics, schools and other essential services, as well as housing, will be needed to meet surging demands. How will cities cope with these booming urban populations? Many governments are already implementing smart city projects, with mobile and other technologies being used to leapfrog otherwise expensive developments, as is the case in Rwanda’s own Vision City. Some argue that these projects should focus on smart citizens, rather than cities. In this session we will debate the key question – who does a ‘smart city’ really benefit and how can it deliver sustainable growth?
