Wi-Fi Network: The Ritz-Carlton, Dubai _ Conference

Welcome from Mats Granryd, Director General, GSMA

Welcome to Dubai and thank you for joining us for Mobile 360 – MENA

The GSMA is here to ensure that the mobile industry thrives and I can’t think of a better city to demonstrate how it can and will. The roll out of 5G brings with it an era of Intelligent Connectivity that encompasses AI, Big Data and IoT – an era that will change the way we live, the way we work, and the way that we do business. When we combine this technology with the collective effort from every stakeholder and the right investment, the possibilities are limitless. At each Mobile 360 Series event, we convene everyone from the mobile ecosystem: business leaders, decision makers, policy makers, regulators and experts. Together we share best practices, solve shared problems and explore new opportunities. Our team has curated an outstanding programme of keynote speakers and high-level discussions.

Every person at this event has something to contribute to the success of your business or organisation. Seek them out or ask us to introduce you. Every member of the GSMA team is here to make this event as useful and productive as possible for you and your business.

If you’re not already a member of the GSMA, ask us about the benefits of becoming one. Amongst these are the economic and financial reports and forecasting that GSMA Intelligence publishes. Our statistics, financial modelling, and in-depth analyses provide the foundation for industry-wide decisions on everything from investing in network infrastructure to tax planning. Join us and use it. It could save you significant time and resource.

On behalf of the GSMA, I’d like to thank our sponsors, hosts and partners Etisalat, VISA, xen1thlabs, and Telecom Egypt for their generous support and you, for your participation in this dynamic and productive conference.

Mobile Economy – MENA

By 2023, mobile’s contribution in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region will reach just over $220 billion as countries increasingly benefit from the improvements in productivity and efficiency brought about by the increased take-up of mobile services. In 2018, mobile technologies and services generated 4.5% of GDP – a contribution that amounted to $191 billion of economic value added – and the mobile ecosystem also supported 1 million jobs (directly and indirectly).

5G services have now become a reality in the region. As of October 2019, 10 operators had launched commercial 5G services in five GCC Arab States and mobile operators in these countries are aiming to be global leaders in 5G deployments, while certain governments view the technology as a potential enabler for their digital transformation ambitions.

The MENA region also has some of the most penetrated mobile markets in the world. By the end of 2018, nearly half of the 25 countries in the region had unique subscriber penetration rates of 70% or more. For context, the global average at the end of the same period was 66%.

Realizing the potential of IoT in MENA

The latest report on the MENA region from GSMA Intelligence takes a closer look at IoT trends, with 470 million IoT connections forecasted by the end of 2019, growing to 1.1 billion by 2025. The report looks at how operators are foundational to the growth and innovation of IoT in the region; how building value-added services beyond connectivity is the key to monetisation; how governments play a vital role as both policymakers and customers; and how MENA has a strategic opportunity to lead on security by design.
