5G: Infrastructure, Challenges and Opportunities Workshop - GSMA Mobile 360 Series

5G: Infrastructure, Challenges and Opportunities Workshop

Workshops

Date & Time

Wednesday, 27 Nov

14:30 - 17:30

Description

Location: Splendido Meeting Room

Agenda:

14.30 – 14.40     Welcome remarks

                             Mohamed Abbes, Public Policy Director, GSMA

14.45 – 15.55      Panel 1:  Infrastructure Deployment Challenges

The success of 5G depends on the collaborative effort of operators, industry and policymakers. This panel will discuss key deployment challenges and policy enablers to facilitate the rollout of 5G infrastructure.

Drawing on experiences from previous generations and early 5G deployments, panellists will discuss the key drivers of 5G, enablers to unlock its potential, national 5G plans, and policy actions to encourage required investment.

Issues to explore include:

  • Lessons learnt from 3G and 4G deployments in MENA that can be carried forward to the 5G era;
  • 5G deployments in leading markets and implications for other regions;
  • Key policy levers to accelerate infrastructure deployment – i.e. additional spectrum, access to sites / small cells, backhaul as a key element, infrastructure sharing; and,
  • Policy actions and insights.

Moderator:         Mohamed Abbes, Public Policy Director, GSMA

Panellists:

  • Dr Andrew Arowojolu, CRO ofZain Group
  • Mr Robert Middlehurst, Senior Director Regulatory at Etisalat Group

16.00 – 17.30     Panel 2: The Role of Mobile Backhaul in Enabling 5G

Terrestrial wireless backhaul is the most popular backhaul method today and will still have the largest worldwide share by 2025. This panel will address the role of wireless backhaul in the rollout of 5G networks, including technology evolution, spectrum requirements, regulation and pricing.

 Issues to explore include:

  • Backhaul networks for 5G – pain points and challenges;
  • Technology solutions that will accelerate deployment of high capacity backhaul (i.e. carrier aggregation, E-band / multi-band solutions, and the use of both vertical and horizontal polarisation etc.);
  • The evolution towards higher frequency bands for wireless backhaul and the policies required to support;
  • Requirements with existing spectrum bands to improve geographical spectrum efficiency; and,
  • The type of spectrum licensing needed to improve both regulatory and spectrum efficiency.

Moderator:       Amr Hashem, Technology Director, MENA, GSMA

Panellists:

  • Renato Lombardi, Chairman of ETSI ISG mWT
  • Kenechi Okeleke, Senior Manager, GSMA Intelligence
  • Ahmed, Al Sohaily, CTO, CITC, KSA
  • Emmanuel Lartey, Senior Manager: Mobile and Fixed Network Strategy MTN
