Delivering the Sustainable Development Goals
The Latin America region has been at the forefront of the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals, taking the leadership in delivering SDG-relevant public policy, advocacy and development programs. The region displays a true multi-stakeholder effort with governments, private sector and civil society actively collaborating to deliver the SDGs, and aiming at leaving no one behind.
Achievements in the region abound. For example, over 20 Latin American countries have finalized strategies for sustainable development in the mid- and long-term. Furthermore, a regional Forum on Sustainable Development was established to monitor and promote the three dimensions of sustainable development: people, planet and prosperity.
The mobile industry has played an important part in delivering the SDGs by creating enhanced infrastructure and targeting reduction of poverty through mobile programs and services, technological innovation and job creation. Additionally, through the We Care program, the mobile industry has mobilized all operators in 12 countries in the region around SDG challenges specific to that country, including disaster response, digital inclusion and environmental protection, among others.
However, challenges remain. Latin America remains the region with largest inequalities in the world, and there is a need for more efficient regulation and enhanced infrastructure. The industry needs to work together to achieve further regional and international cooperation, economic regional integration, and enhance the quality of public-private partnerships
