This one and half day course offers participants the chance to learn about the underlying technologies and concepts associated with 5G as well as the regulatory issues that affect the deployment of 5G networks and services.

The mobile industry is preparing to embark on the transition to 5G technology that will build on the achievements of 4G while also creating new opportunities for innovation. 5G will usher in a new era that will see connectivity become increasingly fluid and flexible. On this course, participants learn about the underlying technologies and concepts associated with 5G and discover the key differences between 5G and previous generations of mobile technology. The course also highlights new business models made possible via the introduction of 5G as well as the regulatory issues that affect the deployment of 5G networks and services.

  • Examine the role regulation will play as operators look to unlock the benefits of future 5G services.

Trainers:

Johnny Kim
Strategic Engagement Director and Head of North East Asia, GSMA
“Johnny” John David Kim is Strategic Engagement Director and Head of North East Asia at the GSMA. In this role, he is responsible for engaging with GSMA mobile operator members, ecosystem partners and government/policymakers in the Asia Pacific region. His activities involve working closely with these organisations to introduce, implement and execute GSMA initiatives and programmes. With over 20 years of research and consulting experience in the ICT and Telecoms industry in North East Asia, Johnny has executed and directed major research and consulting studies for MNOs, vendors and government and regulatory organisations. Johnny completed studies in Science and Business/Marketing at the University of Melbourne and Swinburne University of Technology, respectively and has completed postgraduate studies in Economics and Applied Information Systems. As of September 2017, Johnny also holds the position of Adjunct Professor at Yonsei University Graduate School of Information in Seoul, Korea.

Dongwook Kim
Network Technical Specialist, Future Networks, GSMA
Dongwook Kim is a Network Technical Specialist in the Future Networks Programme of the GSMA. In the programme, he is responsible for facilitating the deployment of 5G for GSMA’s members and identifying innovations that can improve the economics of the network. He was the main editor of “Road to 5G: Introduction and Migration” whitepaper and is currently coordinating discussions on selected issues that involves the balance of market requirements and technical feasibility. Before joining the GSMA, Dongwook worked as a research engineer in the department of technology strategy at KT, overseeing and formulating strategies in networks and next generation media. He was represented KT in ITU-T in standardizing 5G and championed QoS (Quality of Service) work under the Focus Group on IMT-2020. He holds a B.A. in Physics and M.Eng. in Management Science from Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST). He is currently Ph.D. candidate in the Graduate School of Innovation & Technology Management at KAIST, specializing in management of innovation in the Information and Communications Technology.
