Mobile 360 Digital Societies examined the components of a successful digital society, and analysed what can be done to progress economies towards this goal. Focusing on the digital platforms enabling new and innovative services, the event focused on the key metrics defining a digital society: digital citizenship, digital commerce, digital identity, digital lifestyle and connectivity, and how developments in these key areas can lead to gains for society as a whole.

The Mobile 360 Digital Societies conference included a mix of keynotes, panel discussions, case studies, workshops, and more from 39 leading speakers in the APAC region. Over 1,250 professionals from government ministries, regulatory bodies, mobile network operators, academia, start-ups, and representatives from outside the digital ecosystem convened to discuss digital transformation and advance their own business goals and initiatives.
Day 1 Conference: The conference kicked off with the session Forging Digital Societies through Digital Platforms and included keynotes from Gobind Singh Deo, Minister of MCMC, and CEOs from AirAsia Group, Axiata, Digi Telecom, and Maxis Broadband. Tony Fernandes, co-founder and CEO AirAsia Group, aims to disrupt the financial services sector, particularly over-priced remittance services, in the same way the change travel in ASEAN. In their addresses, MNOs Digi and Maxis mentioned they are moving ahead on 5G but cautiously and that more collaboration at the infrastructure level is needed to speed up rollouts.
Pushpa Nair, a commissioner with Malaysia’s regulator, MCMC, was candid in a panel on the challenges government faces developing simple and fast public services, noting simple, clear and government do not always go together.
The session on Governments Building Simple, Clear and Fast Public Services brought representatives from Japan, Malaysia, and Indonesia to discuss policy for digital services.
During the afternoon spotlight on Korea 5G, Lee Kang-yong, deputy director of ICT and Broadcasting Technology Policy Division at Korea’s Ministry of Science and ICT, said it surpassed the 3 million 5G subscriber mark in early Sept, with covering expected to reach 93 per cent of population by end of the year.
The final two sessions included discussions on digital commerce and securing digital identity that addressed current challenges and need for collaboration.
Day 2 Conference: The conference continued with keynotes examining what future connectivity and a more diverse network landscape looks like while putting the customer first. This session featured addresses and discussions from MCMC, KT, Digi, edotco, Fiberhome, TIP, ZTE, and GSMA.
Following the day two keynotes, a special fireside chat took place between Khoo Yuen Hing, CTO Huawei and Tan Cheng Peng, Head of Technology Strategy & Planning at Maxis to discuss 5G and digitalisation and the profound impact it will have on everyday life.
The conference concluded with a discussion on digital lifestyles as an engine for growth. The panel took a pragmatic look at what industry, government, and wider society can and should do to benefit most from digital lifestyles.
GSMA Mobile for Development launched the Inclusive Tech Lab: a testing ground for transformative digital innovations. The lab takes a hands-on approach to research, test and develop the inclusive technologies of the future. The Lab will strategise, build, and pilot solutions, and disseminate the insights and assets to the wider industry. The Inclusive Tech Lab was launched during a special evening networking reception at Mobile 360 Digital Societies.
Several workshops and partner programmes took a deep dive into specific topics beyond the conference discussions.
