In the run up to the Mobile 360 – Latin America in Mexico City, Insights360 spoke with Onofre Tamargo, UNISOC LATAM Head, to discuss tech trends in Latin America and their vision for the future.
What are the biggest mobile trends that we can expect to impact the Latin American market over the next couple of years?
Based on our global experience we believe that 3G smart feature phone and 4G smart phone will be the next big trend in LATAM, this is the best opportunity for carriers to take their feature phones users to the next level. Also, smartphones in the entry-level segment will be more powerful with more technology 4G, more CPU cores and more memory for a great experience at affordable prices.
Also we have noticed that mobile ecology is extending to IoT field in LATAM which echoes global trends. Although currently, IoT ecology is not that well-developed and mature in LATAM, we believe there will be a boost in the coming years, and we are ready for that.
How do you think these innovations will impact the Latin American economy?
For mobile phone market, it will be a challenge to keep growing during the following years. Most people already have access to a communication device now, so the best option for carriers is to increase their ARPU, reduce OPEX and have a lean strategy on monetization services. Consumers using their new smart features phones will get access to more information through browser/websites and communication through social networks (Facebook, Whatsapp). This is a path to digitalize all segments of population in Latin America.
We believe the answer – for carriers – is to migrate their low tier user (more than 20 million bar phone 2G actually in LATAM) to a Smart Feature Phone solutions…this should be the next big trend for LATAM countries.

We are always glad to be part of GSMA Mobile 360 Series. This is a good opportunity to reunite with our actual and potential clients around the globe. This event is always distinguished for its quality and Mobile 360 – Latin America is not an exception.
A few years ago, we choose Mexico as our main office for LATAM operations, so being part of this event is definitely one of our milestones.
